In Honor and Recognition of...
Mrs. Georgia Virginia Nichols-Campbell was an educator for the Eudora, Arkansas and Chicago, Illinois public school systems. Mrs. Campbell often witnessed the disappointments of students who wanted to continue their educational pursuits beyond high school but were without the financial means to do so. In her effort to assist these students, Her labor of love became an annual fundraising dinner and dance. Proceeds were used to provide the financial-aid necessary to realize her vision.
As a tribute to Mrs. Campbell the goal of the G.V.N-C. Foundation is to provide two four-year tuition scholarships to post secondary education graduates of the Eudora Arkansas Public School System or to the children and grand-children of former graduates. As a visionary, compassionate and loving representative of "small town" America, it is in her spirit that the G.V.N-C. Foundation (since its beginning in December 1997) has awarded twenty-one, four-year tuition scholarship to Eudora's youth and demonstrated its commitment to moving those she loved towards greatness.
During 2006, the Eudora High School was closed and annexed to become a part of what is now the consolidated Lake Side School District. Regardless of the devastating effect this change may have had on the youth and residents of Eudora, the G.V.N-C. Foundation remains committed to offering financial assistance to those students of Eudora who graduate from Lake Side High School or enroll and graduate from other high schools in search of academic excellence.
Moving Those We Love... Towards Greatness!
Our Mission
To provide college tuition scholarships annually, to targeted and qualified high school graduates who are specifically linked to the former Eudora, Arkansas, Public School System.
Background: Redistricting and the Closing of Eudora High School
In 2006, only months prior to the expiration of the federally imposed fifty-year oversight of Arkansas Schools, the state of Arkansas mandated closing of Eudora High School and annexation with Lake Side High School to become what is now the Lake Side School District. Most students from Eudora High School enroll at Lake Side High School while others attend private schools in Mississippi, Louisiana and other public school districts in Arkansas. It is important to point out that the oversight of the Arkansas School System was the result of the 1957 integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. That historical event affected not only schools in the state of Arkansas but public schools across America.
Located fourteen miles North of Louisiana and twenty-five miles West of Mississippi, http://www.isjl.org/history/archive/ar/eudora.htm Eudora Arkansas is located in a somewhat isolated and precariously economically deprived area of the State. Eudora High School was, but has now become, a historical reminder of a school system for which Eudorians nation-wide still hold much pride.
The Georgia V. Nichols-Campbell (G.V.N-C.) Foundation: A Continuing Presence
Closure of Eudora High School had an understandable but not fully realized impact on the small community. Citizens of Eudora have witnessed integration and name changes of the High School over the years but those actions pale in comparison to the total closure of what was "our" High School.
Regardless of the reasons for the closure, the Georgia Virginia Nichols-Campbell (G.V.N-C.) Foundation remains determined; its mission has not changed. It is more determined to do all it can to assist Eudora's youth in their pursuit of higher education. The Foundation's Board of Directors and Officers understand the charitable significance of their efforts on behalf of academically talented students of Eudora, who without their support, might not otherwise have the financial means necessary to enroll in college. Supporters of the Foundation also realize that charitable donations will allow the organization to assist a few but charitable efforts does not resolve the broader and not easily defined root problems facing these students and the community. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eudora,_Arkansas#References
Proceeds from the fundraising activities of the Georgia Virginia Nichols-Campbell Foundation will provide tuition scholarships to Eudora's youth. The Foundation will screen applicants to identify specifically targeted, qualified high school students who: (1) graduated through the Eudora Arkansas School System, (2) would have graduated if the High School still existed; or (3) are children or grandchildren of such graduates. These changes will further extend the boundaries to include those students whose plans are to enroll in other school districts as the result of the 2006 redistricting.
Transition is not always easy. The resilience and determination of Eudora's youth and its citizens, as well as those Eudorians and friends nation-wide who have willingly supported the mission of the G.V.N-C Foundation, will respond admirably to the situations confronting all of us as a result of this historic change.
With the assurance of the Georgia Virginia Nichols-Campbell Foundation and its dedicated supporters, Eudora's youth will have a reliable resource. One whose sole purpose is to assist them in fulfilling their dreams of earning college degrees. In turn, each of them will be afforded a better opportunity to approach and achieve realistic goals. Goals that are achievable only by acquiring the learning a college degree provides, as well as experiencing those opportunities that higher levels of education will bring.
